Hit and run by neighbor! Need your advise! Thanks!

update: Since many of you are having a hard time believing the truck damaged my car, I've uploaded pictures of the car that made a worse damage to my trunk and bumper a year ago in post #11. Maybe that will help you guys understand how this can occur with minimal damage on the other party's car. All I want to say is a stationary car will always sustain more damage than a car in-motion..

Dear all,

It's a little long, but I hope you guys can share some thoughts on this. My car took a hard hit from the back while parked in front of my house this past Thursday. Initial check suggest that the damage was done by a car turning into the driveway (my car was parallel parked outside of my house at the time), which I suspect it was damaged by someone next door. I couldn't confirm this on the spot as there weren't any cars around at the time, and my neighbor's house has been unoccupied for quite a while (and no security cams in my neighborhood). When I came home that night, I saw a green Toyota Tacoma parked in my neighbor's driveway that immediately caught my attention and I believe they are the new neighbor. I checked the truck and found scratches and paint transfer both from it's left front bumper and mirror that matched my car's damage. Surprisingly no actual damage was sustained on the truck, as the bumper is metal I believe. I didn't talk to the suspects since they were trying for hit and run anyways (I was afraid they are going to erase the evidence after I talk to them). So I immediately called my insurance and made a police report, but the truck's gone after this.

I was hoping the police will seek out an investigation, but the officer filing my report told me cop's in California won't bother with minor accidents like this (If they do something, my case would be easily closed). My insurance told me they will try to track down the guy, if the height and dimensions of the damage match, then they will go through with the other party's insurance.

The repair estimate range from $2300 and could go up to $4300 if the trunk needs to be replaced and they will need to repaint the sides to match the color. I am not too worry about the repair but I am concern if this guy is going to be caught or not! I don't feel very good living next to a bunch of "criminals"!

What are you guys' thought on this case? I need your input. Thanks

I couldn't get better quality pictures here as San Francisco has been cloudy all the time.

Here's a video I took of the two cars.

you're going to need better pictures -- from the video, it appears the damage on the truck couldve have been from anything.

wait, I am confused... how exactly does that mirror scratch on the truck match the hit sport on your trunk? It sounds to me like you are trying to find a scapegoat for your accident. Check you mom and dads car too... maybe they did it

The damage on the truck doesn't match the damage on your car. I think you're just going to end up pissing off your neighbors for nothing.

haha, I agree, if I saw a dude with a camera closing up on my bumper, I would get a running start and kick him as if he was a soccer ball.

edit: saw your added pics... thank god you are not a criminal investigator. No way the damage on the truck matched the damage on the car.

If you measure the total height of your damage from your car, it doesn't add up with the truck. If the truck did hit yours, it would show marks that it came into contact with something the exact same height as the damage on your car.

Guys I am being serious here. I am confident about this issue as the same type of accident happened to my car a year ago. I uploaded pictures if I makes it clearer.

There are not only scratches on the chrome part of the bumper, but also the lower plastic part + paint transfer. The pictures just don't show much of it.

The location is a downhill btw...

The truck would have more damage to its bumper if it really did that to your car. What it has is barely a scuff, like if you get to close to something in a parking lot. It would be major dented if it ripped up your bumper like that. And the damage (ha) to the truck mirror is nothing that would dent your trunk like that. I got more damage to my mirror from getting too close to a trash can.

I hope you find who really did it, scrapped up car is always frustrating.

Agreed...you have nothing. Look, these are your neighbors; you have to live around them for a good while. If you have no solid evidence, hang it up.
