Guy backs up into my car then blames me! How much damage is this?

So I get out of work last night and I'm waiting at light, this is right by the Taste Of Chicago: www.explorechicago.o...aste_of_chicago.html when the MF'r in front of me puts his SUV into reverse and then plows into me.

It all happened so fast I didn't even have time to hit the horn.

ME: WTF!

Him: Sorry, I didn't see you. I was reversing to get my friend.

So because the Taste of Chicago was going on luckily there were tons of cops on foot patrolling the event and saw we had an accident and came over. They asked what happened and I told them he reversed into me. The guy admitted he was at fault and corroborated what I had said. No one was able to come take a report because they were all busy so they directed us to head to the nearest Police station.

We get to the station to file the report and said SOB lies and says I rear ended him. WTF! I tell the cop taking the report that I'll be right back. I rush back to the Taste and find the 4 cops working the event that were on the scene when he hit me. They phone into the station with their Sgt. and confirm that he was the one that he hit my car.

I get back to the station and clearly this dickhead now knows he cannot lie anymore and get away with it. Officers vouching for me are listed in the reports with names and badge numbers. I got lucky, without any witnesses it would have looked like I rear ended him.

How much damage does this look like and what do you think the repairs will cost?

Ouch!

No idea how much that would cost to repair, but the dealer wanted $1,000 just to fix some minor dents on my hood, plus like $1400 for a new rear bumper when someone rear ended my 335 so... my guess is $4-5k. Needs a new hood, headlamp and the bumper probably needs some work also.

^The Bumper is completely shot. Anyway, your insurance should cover it with no harm to your premiums now, thanks to the police looking on.

You guys really think the bumper needs to be replaced? I know the hood does for sure, but I thought they could just repair the bumper and reuse it.

tell the 5-0 you want him arrested and charged for falsifying a police report

If you get things done by the dealer it looks like at least 3k in damages. Don't worry about it because his insurance will cover it. Just make sure you scour the damage estimate by the claim adjuster to make sure they don't go cheap on anything.

uh why would u want them to not replace something?

I would love a new bumper, I was just inquiring. I'm scared to see how bad it is once they pop the hood open. Also I didn't notice this until I took the pictures but it looks like my driver side light has a piece of plastic that cracked off and is inside the housing.

Shouldn't the other guy's insurance cover it? It shouldn't have anything to do with the OP's insurance.

Good to hear that you had police witnesses!

I had a lady very nearly back into me a few months ago at a stoplight. After it happened I wondered if she had hit me if it would even be possible for me to prove I hadn't rear ended her. I'm glad I didn't have to find out.
