Danatek FS Ignition Critique

I added the Danatek FS2-20 Ignition to my 09 brute this week. I already had the powercommander5, and really liked the performance of my bike the way it was, but I wanted to get rid of the low speed timing retard so I could pull wheelies.

The Danatek FS Ignition is a programmable module that controls the timing, and it can also control the fuel mapping. However, you have to purchase their Curvemaker software to program it, and that’s another $100.

From the factory, the module is programmed with a 4 degree advance throughout the entire rpm range, and it raises the stock rev limiter to 9000 rpm. It does not override the reverse limiter (at least from the factory, I don’t know if this can be programmed). Also, from the factory, the fuel maps are all stock.

The fuel maps are similar to the moose and hmf mapping modules. It only controls 3 rpm bands - low, med, and high. It can adjust from -17% to 0 to +20%. So its not nearly as granular as the powercommander.

The module comes with 3 leads - 1 to the front and rear coils, one to the crank speed sensor (white connector between the shock towers), and one to the EFI harness. It can plug inline with the powwercommander and as long as the powercommander is nearest to the efi injectors, then the fuel signal is controlled by the powercommander.

I ran all of the wires and mounted the module with no issues. The instructions were very straight forward. The bike cranked right up with no issues. I immediately noticed that the revs seemed much quicker. When I drove it, I didn’t really notice much difference. When in High gear, and floor the throttle, the front wheels barely come off the ground. In Low gear, the front wheels pop right up. This is the biggest change in performance. Before the module, I had to work to get the front wheels to pop up (after I added 29.5 laws and the lift, plus my 220lb butt).

So, I guess I got what I wanted; no low speed timing retard and I can pull wheelies now. But I had assumed with a full piggyback ECM module that I would get reverse limit override also. I’m really disappointed that I would have to shell out another bill to get the programming software. That ought to be free, just like with the powercommander.

Maybe if I was racing and wanted to tune the performance of the engine, the dynatek would be the right choice. But I just want to play in the mud and putt around. At this point, I wish I had gone with the Diamond G module for EFI bikes. Its $100 cheaper than the dynatek, less complex, easier to install. Live and learn. Anyone want to buy a Dynatek, barely used?
